The colours for this piece were chosen for a football commission (for a team I won’t name!), but I have to admit, I love how it turned out.
Instead of adding black for shadows, I built up depth using three different blues: Prussian, Indigo and Primary. Layering tones of the same colour creates a much richer, more vibrant finish. A touch of Permanent White lifts the beak and gives it that extra bit of contrast.
Feathers are always one of my favourite parts to paint. Using short, layered brush strokes, I worked to keep each layer visible so you can really feel the texture and movement in the plumage.
