Doughnuts

I started this piece on New Year’s Day, while everyone was talking about cutting back. It felt like the perfect time to paint something indulgent, something to look forward to for when the resolutions eventually end.

There’s a real sense of nostalgia in this one too. It reminds me of school days and those after-school treats you couldn’t wait for.

I approached it colour-first, choosing toppings based on what felt bold and playful against the strong yellow background. It was a fun process, balancing combinations and letting instinct lead the way.

The black shadow took some convincing. I held off for a while, but the piece needed grounding. Without it, everything felt a little flat. Adding it brought the doughnuts into the space and gave the whole painting more depth.

I tried (and I hope I exceeded) in making them look as tempting as possible.
